Trailer Analysis THE FAULT IN OUR STARS
This frame, is an over the shoulder shot, suggests panic and worry in the movie. This adds suspense to the movie and makes you wonder what is going to happen. The protagonist is in the frame and is in pain so it makes you worry. It is also an over the shoulder shot, so it makes you feel like you are actually following the characters into the emergency entrance. It is very dull lighting which could suggest pain and sadness. The non-diegetic sound is her narrating it, during this frame she says “obliterate everything”. This could connote she thinks that something bad is going to happen and that it will ruin everything.
This frame suggests pain and sadness as well as it shows he is upset. This could connote that something bad happens. We also see someone walking away which could connote pain. The expression on the main characters face could suggest the sadness of this scene. It also makes us worry and wonder what is going to happen. The scene is a mid-shot this is used to make you feel like you are there watching him. The wall behind him is blue this connotes sadness however the paintings have different colours and different meanings; the yellow connotes hope, the green connotes happiness and the red connotes death/anger. This could connote that something else bad happens in the movie. During this time she says “I don’t want to hurt you” this could connote that she cares for him and doesn’t want him to get hurt.
This frame suggests love and romance as they are staring into each other’s eyes and they both look happy. This is a mid-shot as it makes you feel like you are there too standing in front of them. There is low key lighting as it gives off a romantic feel. They are staring at each other this connotes love. A happy upbeat song starts playing at the start of this frame this show they are happy.
This diagonal shot connotes sadness as they both are upset and crying. She is very upset which could connote something bad happening, this creates suspense. This is a side angle so it as if you are sitting on the bench with them. During this frame there is an up-beat song which could suggest it goes quickly and happens quickly. The upbeat song could also connote suspense and shock. He is wearing dark colours in this frame this could suggest something bad is happening to him. She is leaning on his shoulder this could show they have a very close friendship or that they have a romantic connection. The frame has the two protagonists in the centre this could show that something bad is happening to one of them.
In this frame she is suppose to be staring up at the sky but instead she breaks the fourth wall and she is staring at us. She looks sad in this scene. This is a head shot as it makes you feel like you are staring straight at her, it also makes you focus on her facial expression. She is lying on the grass this could connote that she is envious of us as she is staring at us.
This mid-shot show Hazel in hospital this connotes she is ill. She is in a white room which could connote she is clean and pure. She is slouching this could show she doesn’t care or isn’t bothered about what is happening. She has a plain expression on her face this could suggest everything is ok. To the right of the frame there is an orange wall this suggests happiness is in the future as it is on the right of her. The shot is angled this makes you feel like you are sitting in there with her. The blue and green bubbles in the background suggest sadness or envy popping up the future because they are floating in the air above her and around her. The hospital equipment in the background shows she is quite ill.
The over the shoulder shot shows the protagonists together. We can see that Hazel is happy as she is smiling. She looks very happy in this scene. We can also connote a connection between them as she is staring into his eyes. This is a behind the shoulder shot making you feel like you are standing behind him. She also looks a little bit nervous this could suggest she is happy to meet him. We cannot see the other character’s facial expressions so maybe something happens to him in the future, they are both also wearing dark clothes in this frame so something bad may happen to them both.
The frame shows the distribution company so it is advertising that too. The text is in blue and white like the title this could suggest plain and sadness. The background is the stars on hazel’s ceiling that are glow in the dark. The stars are part of the title so it could have something to do with the meaning of the title. The background of this is very dark which could suggest suspense or drama and/or death in the movie.
Towards the end of the trailer the title of the movie is shown this is to advertise it and it is at the ending so you would remember it. The film title is written in chalk this could connote that it doesn’t last long or it wears off. It is also in blue and white which connotes sadness and emptiness.
This long shot is used to represent sadness and hurt. This makes you think about what is wrong. The protagonist is crying and is upset. She is being comforted by her parents, who also look sad. However Augustus isn’t there to comfort her though so this could show something bad happens to him or someone he knows. The room is dark lit this could represent sadness. The shot is a middle shot so you are on the same level as them and it makes you feel like you are there with them.
